The Little Rock Nine

Do you think the present media and the past media have effects and influence on the people that are around you when it comes to the separation of people? Life between black and white people are not completely equal now but much better than then they used to be. The Little Rock Nine was a group of African American students who attended the first white and black school. Back in that time things for black people were not fair and they wanted to have equal rights. We can see the inequality of races were very clear through different forms of the media. The media had a great influence of events whether it is true or fake, but other times they would cover up things leaving people with questions about it. The media had a great influence of events whether it is true or fake, but other times they would cover up things leaving people with questions about it.The various mediums illuminated and revealed the story of The Little Rock Nine. The photographer, Counts, took a photo of a colored man by the name of Alex L. Wilson. In the photo, it is showing Alex being beaten up by white segregationists. (Little Rock Girl 1957 pg. 32). Alex L. Wilson was a symbol of the free press and is being demonstrated that he could not even do his job because of the life threatening situation he was put in. In the speech by Martin Luther King "I Have a Dream" he says, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." (I Have a Dream speech p.15). African Americans were just wanting to have the same freedoms and rights as white people were given. They just wanted to feel like they were being treated more as a human rather than just an object. On page 5 of Little Rock Girl 1957, a photo is shown of the National Guardsmen letting a white girl go through to Little Rock Central High School and blocking off a colored girl, Elizabeth Eckford, from getting through to the school. The school was being guarded by Guardsmen. The Guardsmen were there to protect the black students at the school but instead they were not allowing colored people in and this is showing how people such as the government wanted things done for white people to stay in control. These different mediums clearly stated how the story of The Little Rock Nine happened and how the story of these children really happened.

The mediums provided give an incomplete or inaccurate pictures of events surrounding the Little Rock Nine. In the News Video it says, "It was about three hours after the court made its decision that Little Rock was left unguarded for 18 days" (NBC News Video). Faubus who was a governor in Arkansas did not understand why colored people want their children in these schools especially at this time and whyy the kids would continue to come back. Nobody ever really explained in the news as to why they continued to put themself in danger. In photo 3 it shows, a young colored girl named Elizabeth Eckford was getting bullied by the white children that were around her. This shows how black people were treated and how awful their lives were and nobody could understand why they kept trying. Many people thought they should just give up. Elizabeth Eckford continued to stay courageous no matter what anybody did or said to her. We will never understand why African Americans continued to try because of the incomplete or inaccurate message these mediums give. The media showed events which influenced others but sometimes they left people questioning. The mediums revealed the real story of the Little Rock Nine. Although, other time times they covered up things or gave us false meaning on the story. The mediums can give us both true or false statements and people will always believe what the press has to say about it. They have the power to make people believe what they want to believe. The press is responsible for telling people what is happening around their area, even if they do not always the truth do not always tell the truth about the story.
